Poe sure is hit and miss.

The good Poe stories are really good but the bad ones are often really bad. I found his short horror stories good, his mystery stories kind of dull, his explanation of poetry (and his poems other than The Raven) boring. He spends too much time wanting to explain the exact physics/math/whatever of various phenomana though I did actually enjoy his breakdown of how the Mechanical Turk worked.

Also, I'm really glad we no longer are in the time period where an author can just drop French, German, and Greek without translation (I guess he at least translated the Hebrew quotes).

Also also, calling Poe's treatment of women, black people, and indigenous people antiquated would be extremely charitable.

Anyway, Edgar Allan Poe is more of a nerd than a goth and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
